Putting kids aside (I'm not a parent), it's something I have to admit I constantly monitor myself about. On the thing about pulling my phone not exactly to stave off sadness or anything so deep, but just to avoid boredom or simply just to "have something to do".
Because truth is, it doesn't really matter if you are a kid or not, people overall are very susceptible to building this thing as a reflex of sorts... well, kinda like looking at your watch was in the past, but way more insidious.
All those in between time we had to think about stuff by ourselves, without interference/input of surroundings, got replaced by checking e-mails, playing mobile games, texting someone, looking at the weather predictions, checking RSS entries, etc etc.
Whether this is a thing that will actually be embeded on the next generation or not is a thing to discuss, and perhaps it's just me getting old, but I kinda consider the ability to have that time of introspection a very important thing that could be lost because we just don't allow ourselves to have them.
So much so that it's also a bit why I write so many comments... it's one of the things that writting comments allows you to do, I guess - other than replying to posts and other comments, to think about subjects a bit by yourself.
