‘Crazy Rich Asians’: The Movie

‘People have always been fascinated by the foibles of the wealthy and privileged,’ says author Kevin Kwan.
Hollywood has picked up the film rights to “Crazy Rich Asians,”  author Kevin Kwan’s best-selling novel about three prominent Chinese families preparing for a lavish wedding in Singapore.
Color Force, the production company behind last year’s hit “The Hunger Games,” acquired the rights for an undisclosed amount. The film will be produced outside of the studio system, it said in a statement.
“This book has a great story — it is a real page turner that I believe has authentic global appeal,” said Color Force CEO Nina Jacobson, who will serve as one of the film’s producers. “My hope is to make a movie that resonates in both the East and the West.”
The novel, which was published in June, has earned favorable reviews for its comic social satire and depiction of modern Asia as a growing economic powerhouse.
“One of the things I look forward to is casting the actors who will bring Kevin’s vivid characters to life,” Ms. Jacobson said. “It is a real opportunity for Color Force to get to cast a movie from the great global pool of Asian talent.”
Another task for Color Force will be finding a director.

“We will aim for a director who is passionate about this book and has the skills and talent to adapt it well, regardless of his or her ethnicity,” said Ms. Jacobson.
In a recent interview with the Journal, Mr. Kwan, who was born in Singapore and now lives in New York, said he drew from personal experience for his first novel.
“People have always been fascinated by the foibles of the wealthy and privileged,” he said.
