Well, it turns out selling pre-prepped meals to aspiring home chefs can make a lot of money.
Blue Apron, a company which does just that, today announced it is now delivering 1 million meals per month at $10 a pop. And alongside this milestone, the First Round, BoxGroup, and Stripes Group-backed startup shares that it is now easing into traditional ecommerce with an e-shop for kitchen goods — launching next week.
Blue Apron competes with a few eerily similar ingredient-delivery startups, including Techstars and Lerer Hippeau Ventures-backed Plated, Insight Venture Partners-backed Hello Fresh, and Thrive and SV Angel-backed Gobble. Although Blue Apron’s margins remain unknown, tech investors are clearly into the profit-generating potential of meal-kits-on-wheels.
