Last week, we announced that we are now accepting Bitcoin as a form of payment through Bitpay, a Bitcoin payment service. The cryptocurrency has grown considerably in the past few years in terms of popularity and usage, and since we are an online marketplace it only made sense that we accept this online currency.
For those who don’t know, Bitcoin is a digital currency created and held electronically. Unlike dollars or euros, Bitcoins are a decentralized currency, meaning there is no central authority that controls its production. Instead, Bitcoins are produced by people running computers all around the world, using software that solves mathematical problems in a process called “mining”.
We believe in giving our customers freedom of choice: whether it comes to selecting a printer and receiving multiple quotes, or by offering a variety of payment methods. With Bitcoin, we feel that we are giving more options to our customers.
While Bitcoin usage is still in its infancy, a growing number of Bitcoin users are students in colleges all over the nation, and more companies are beginning to accept it. Across the country there have been stories of Bitcoins increased integration into our society.
Recently, Georgia Tech has its own Bitcoin wallet and accepts Bitcoin across its campus, MIT gave all its undergraduates $100 worth of Bitcoin, and New York University is now offering a course on Bitcoin. In addition, there will even be acollege football bowl game sponsored by Bitcoin this December.
We see Bitcoin as a new way to further engage with college students, and in addition to accepting Bitcoin payments, we will work with Pheeva, BitPay, and the College Cryptocurrency Network as they work to continue establishing Bitcoin on college campuses.
The College Cryptocurrency Network (CCN) was formed as an association of “Bitcoin Clubs” at Stanford, MIT, and the University of Michigan in early 2014 as a means to properly educate young people about the potential of Bitcoin. CCN has since spread to every habitable continent, with over 100 chapters. By partnering with CCN, we hope to provide custom apparel to college Bitcoin clubs, organizations.
Taggler already has a well established connection to the college scene. We began at the Viterbi Startup Garage at the University of Southern California, and many of our first customers were clubs, and organizations from universities in the Los Angeles area.
From there we have expanded our reach to other college campuses thanks to our successful TagglerU program, which we started this fall. Taggler recruited, trained, and deployed student representatives across college campuses to help their fellow students save. As part of the Taggler team, these agents have been referring clubs, intramural teams, and friends to Taggler for all of their custom apparel needs. In return, agents receive commission on every order and valuable sales experience. With Bitcoin, our TagglerU reps have another payment option to offer.
Currently, if you use Bitcoin to pay for your next order, we are offering a rebate of 10% off your purchase.
